You should schedule your child’s first dental visit once his or her first tooth appears, but no later than his or her first birthday. After the first visit, your child should return to our office every six months for routine dental checkups and cleanings. Dr. Spaniel may recommend checkups sooner than six months depending on your child’s oral health.
At Summerwood Family Dental, we strive to your make your child’s visit with us as comfortable and stress-free as possible. Dr. Spaniel and our friendly team will engage your child by answering his or her questions as we examine their mouth. Your child’s exam may include X-rays to identify any dental issues that may be detected with a visual exam. The cleaning portion of the appointment is thorough yet gentle. Dr. Spaniel is patient with her youngest patients and provides a hands-on tutorial on the proper brushing and flossing technique. Instilling good oral health habits in your child is a joint effort. Dr. Spaniel will work closely with you and provide the tools you need to guide your children’s oral hygiene practices.
Fluoride treatments and dental sealants are preventative dentistry services that can help protect your child’s teeth from cavities. Fluoride is a naturally-occurring mineral that promotes healthy tooth enamel. Summerwood Family Dental provides in-office fluoride treatments to strengthen teeth and minimize the risk of cavities. Dental sealants are small pieces of plastic placed over the teeth’s chewing surfaces to prevent food particles and bacteria from accumulating. Dr. Spaniel often recommends sealants to her youngest patients.
If your child does develop a cavity, Dr. Spaniel can treat the affected tooth with a dental filling. Crafted from strong and durable dental materials, fillings can restore a tooth to optimal health while preventing future damage.
If your child plays contact sports, he or she should be fitted for a mouth guard. Dr. Spaniel can create a custom mouth guard to protect your child’s teeth, gums, lips and cheeks from injuries, giving you peace of mind when he or she plays sports. Custom mouth guards are comfortable to wear than over-the-counter mouth guards, so children are more likely to wear them.
Dental emergencies can occur at any time — at home, school or while your child plays sports. Dr. Spaniel and our team are ready and available to quickly and effectively treat an array of dental emergencies, including a knocked-out tooth or trauma to the jaw or gums. We recommend keeping our office’s phone number handy in case an emergency occurs.
